A diesel generator is an electrical unit, manufactured by combining a diesel engine and an alternator also known as electrical generator. The diesel engine produces mechanical energy when fired up, this mechanical energy is then converted into electrical energy by the alternator. The principle behind the diesel generator is simple and it's applications are countless. The most important feature of a diesel generator is that, it can be used as a portable power unit. This one feature has literally multiplied the number of applications of a diesel generators. Let's see some of the applications.

Electrical energy is one of the most fundamental needs of any industry. The logic is quite simple, "If there is no electricity, the machines won't work, and if the machines don't work, the industry suffers a huge loss ". To avoid this, almost every industry now a days, has a power backup and it comes ,almost always, in the form of a diesel generator set. Small and medium business usually have smaller diesel generators having an output of 27 kVA to 500 kVA, whereas large industries have larger generator sets with an output of 650 kVA to 3000 kVA.

Sources reveal that 14% of all the diesel generators manufactured around the world are employed in the entertainment industry. The reason is quite obvious, as this industry requires power arrangements on their shooting locations, where power from the national grid may or may not be available. In some of the eastern countries you can find a diesel generator in every office, shop, restaurant and hotel as the national grid in these countries still do not produce enough power to fulfill their growing energy needs.

Apart from industrial uses, diesel generators are also widely used for domestic purpose. In some countries where there is scarcity of national power supply, people use diesel generators for their daily household work. In India, to electrify the marriage procession, a diesel generator is mounted on a wooden cart which is pulled by a pair of bulls. This generator is connected to a series of fluorescent lamps carried by a group of people. Probably this could be the wildest application of a diesel generator.
